A natural horn is a brass instrument without valves or keys, used mainly in the Baroque and Classical eras (1600s–early 1800s). It consists of coiled metal tubing and produces sound through the player’s lip vibrations. Pitch is changed by adjusting embouchure, airspeed, or using hand-stopping (placing the hand in the bell) to access the harmonic series. Crooks, detachable tubing sections, allow key changes. Its limited chromatic range makes it challenging to play compared to modern valved horns. Composers like Mozart used it for its distinctive, warm tone. Today, it’s used in period performances for historical accuracy.
