A paperclip contrabass clarinet (also called a "paperclip contra") is a specific design of the BB♭ contrabass clarinet — the lowest-pitched member of the clarinet family, sounding an octave below the bass clarinet and two octaves below a standard B♭ clarinet.
The "paperclip" nickname comes from its distinctive folded/looped tubing shape, which bends the long body back on itself like a giant paperclip (or a rolled-up tube). This makes the instrument much more compact and easier to carry than straight-bodied contrabass clarinets.
It’s a rare, powerful, and visually striking instrument — great for orchestral, band, or solo low-voice work.
In contemporary times, purchasing a paperclip contrabass clarinet (BB♭ contra) is rarely a "necessity" for most clarinetists—a good bass clarinet (to low C) covers the majority of repertoire. However, it becomes highly practical or even essential for specific players, thanks to modern affordable replicas and the design's unique advantages. The paperclip (folded/looped) shape—originally a Leblanc specialty from the 1930s–60s—remains popular because it solves the biggest problems of traditional straight contrabasses: bulk and cost.
